An EVM-compatible blockchain for mobile-first payments, featuring ultralight mobile clients and phone-number-based identity to deliver fast, low-cost, real-world transactions using CELO.
Celo is an EVM-compatible, mobile-first Proof-of-Stake mainnet designed for everyday payments, remittances, and real-world DeFi. It delivers ~5-second block finality, capacity in the hundreds of TPS, and typical transaction fees under $0.01 (often < $0.001), with daily activity commonly in the tens to hundreds of thousands of transactions and the unique ability to pay gas in CELO or stablecoins like cUSD and cEUR. Common use cases include micro-payments, merchant checkout, savings and lending, and cross-border transfers using Celo-native stable assets (cUSD, cEUR, cREAL).
Celo stands out with fee abstraction (pay gas in stablecoins), mobile UX features like phone-number-based identity attestations, and ultra-light clients (Plumo) that keep on-chain access fast on low-end smartphones. Its IBFT Proof-of-Stake consensus provides deterministic finality in ~5 seconds and sub-cent average gas, enabling faster, cheaper settlement than many L1s (e.g., Ethereum L1’s ~12s blocks and higher fees) while sustaining throughput in the hundreds of TPS. Celo is also carbon-negative via on-chain offsets and fully EVM-compatible, so Ethereum tooling and contracts work out of the box.
Celo uses CELO as the gas token for transaction fees. You can obtain CELO by bridging from other chains or purchasing using thirdweb Bridge.
To bridge CELO to Celo, connect your wallet to thirdweb bridge, select your source chain, choose the token you want to bridge, select Celo as the destination, enter the amount, and confirm the transaction. The bridge will handle the cross-chain transfer instantly.
To build on Celo you can use thirdweb, which provides an easy way to build, monetize and scale your apps, games or agents. You can find detailed guides and documentation on https://portal.thirdweb.com to get started quickly.
To add Celo to your wallet, you can connect your wallet and click on [Add to Wallet] button at the top of the page. Alternatively, you can add the network manually using the RPC URL and chain details and add it to your wallet's network settings.
To send CELO on Celo, ensure your wallet is connected to the Celo network, enter the recipient's address, specify the amount of CELO to send, review the gas fee, and confirm the transaction in your wallet.
